The Founder

Leon van Zyl

In 2004, Leon van Zyl left behind a successful culinary career in Cape Town to pursue a dream in the heart of New York City. Armed with a passion for fire-cooked meats and a grandmother's philosophy that "good food brings people together," he opened the doors to a small 30-seat restaurant on West 49th Street.

What started as a neighborhood steakhouse quickly evolved into something more. Leon's travels through Japan inspired the addition of a sushi bar. His love of craft beer led to partnerships with local NYC breweries. And his insistence on treating every guest like family turned first-time diners into lifelong regulars.

Today, The Oak & Barrel seats over 120 guests across two floors, with a dedicated bar, a private dining room, and a stage for live weekend performances. But Leon still walks the floor most evenings, making sure every plate that leaves the kitchen meets his exacting standards.

We source only the finest locally-sourced, premium ingredients. Our steaks are dry-aged in-house, and our fish is delivered fresh daily from Fulton Fish Market.
